Audioblogging in my Mothertongue

I have recently discovered a splendid new medium of expression other than blogging. It is called Audio Blogging. Essentially what it is is an online radio station whereby the anchor, who is the blogger, expresses his thoughts and ideas in vocal words. Once accessing one of the Egyptian audio blogs, I was so elated to hear a monologue in Egyptian Arabic for a good five minutes. It had been a long long time since I had had exposure to listening to my mother tongue for so longer. Having to watch corny Egyptian movies or stand those mind-numbing pop songs drives me mad, but this indie, modern, and cosmopolitan means of audio blogging is quite entertaining. One of the audio blogs, Teet Radio, talks about some issues of Egyptian daily life. It is as if I am sitting in downtown Cairo eavesdropping on mindlessly conversing about what they think may be intellectual.
For the past ten minutes I have been listening to some blogger talk about his strange habit of log-keeping, whereby he takes note of all his observations during the day. He keeps prolific notes in notebook, which is secretive but he enjoys recording the behavior of society and people. Although he doesn't enjoy this arduous task, he reviews the events that occurs and observes the consistency of the different people over days. He then talks about his tattoo, which is Chinese character that reads "Truth," which pains him when he finds an inconsistency in his log.
To some extent, I used to do this daily logging in my diaries...But I think I go beyond that by collecting every memory, be it vintage photos, plane/bus/concert tickets, stamps, or any artifact that brings back any memory. I can't wait to return to Cairo to record my experiences there.
Strange, I know, but I take interest in these strange, indie, unconventional kinds of stories, that is so out of the norm. But what is enjoyable is that they play some nice jazz tunes in the background that goes so well with the issue.
Its a good relief to hearing some Egyptian Arabic, but once I feel getting nostalgic and as if I am in Egypt once more, I have to turn of the radio to avoid feeling homesick...

The Modern Nahda
There is no denying that the Arab and Muslim world is going through its dark ages. Although I do not wish to convert this blog entry into another "clash of civilizations" story of how we are the underdogs in comparison to the West, why deny that we have yet to have a revolution on the scale of the European Renaissance, Enlightenment, and Scientific Revolution? I believe that our forefathers had sowed the seeds for such a revolution, but it had never really materialized. Our revolution was called Al-Nahda.
I have familiarized myself with this movement through my readings of memories, autobiographies, and documentaries that I have read in my Arabic studies here at the University of Virginia. It is truly an eye-opener to see the plethora of great works that came out of the Arab World since its decline since the so-called Golden Age that spanned from the 8th century to the 13th century. The Nahda was an intellectual moevement that took place during the early 20th century in Egypt and Lebanon to define an Arab identity through literature. This was an intellectual movement aimed at reform, modernization, and the revival of the Arab fortitude in a modern world where ideologies were competing for supremacy.
The Nahda encouraged an open eye to learn from the world, which was essentially what brought Islam to the forefronts of the world when it embraced everything from Greek to Hindu philosophies.
Why do I embrace the Nahda? Partly because I feel like I am bestowed with an opportunity that the 19th century proponents of the movement were given. I was bestowed with the opportunity to study in the civilizational beacon of knowledge. I am given the unique opportunity to study the Western intellect through science and education. Before my eyes, I have seen one of the most epic shifts in power in the world, the transition of the U.S. government from regime to another. Some in my part of the world couldn't even fathom seeing such a shift in their governments in their lifetime. It is my submergence in Western life and its instutions that motivates me to bring back to Egypt with me a toolkit of methods to modernize, reform, and advance the state of our nation. My tone is ambitious, but my heart is determined.
Upon his return from Paris, Rifa El Tahtawi, an emissary by Mohamed Ali Pasha suggested that we have a lot to learn from the West, but that we should always keep an open-minded approach to modernism that is tailored to the values of Islam.
My particular interest in the Nahda stems from my readings. I have taken several Arabic literature and prose classes at the university and they have exposed me to a period where Arabic literature had seemed to reach its prime. Since Arabic is the lingua franca of most of the Middle East, the exchange of ideas and information quickly led to the ascendence of the Nahda in major cities like Cairo and Beirut and there was an ardent interaction between the two sides through the circulation of literary publications, as I shall outline in my later entries. Magazines such as Al Resalla (The Message), Loghatna al-Gameela (Our Beautiful Language) and al Fagr (The Dawn) exposed Arab readers to the talents around their world. Today, these magazines have sadly disappeared. Moreover, due to the partitioning of the Arab world by the West, many sought opportunities abroad.
My particular interest stems from the Lebanese diaspora, and especially those who traveled to the West. Some of the greatest writers the Arab World has ever seen has been those in exile. This is where the likes of Khalil Gibran Khalil sprung from. To some extent, I feel the same distance from my home like them. I wouldn't be surprised if this same nostalgia that I feel is what inspires me to read and wrte so much about my home land.
Homegrown talents such as Naguib Mahfouz, Taha Husseuin, and other Egyptians pushed this movement forward. But it is worth noting that Taha Husseuin also experience the same Western exposure that I am undergoing myself. The West offers a distinct atmosphere for the exchange of ideas, where you have access to every piece of information known to humankind at your finger tips. This is an advantage that no other civilization can offer nowadays. Despite my reservations about living in the West, I know that this is the suitable environment to develop one's intellect.
The essence of the Nahda was an exposure of the Arab World to the free thought and health competition of ideas that propelled the West to forefronts of the world. Unfortunately, the paranoia of modern day fundamentalist ideologies, both religious and secular have chocked any breathing space for new ideas to be brought to the table that could potentially change the current system. My experience here in the States has been an one that has taught me to be open, rational, progressive, and a distinct love for knowledge. I hope to bring back this spirit of intellectual inquiry to have some impact back home. But my quest from knowledge is far from complete. As I learn more and more about this movement of the Nahda, I will strive to emulate it more and more in my endeavors.

A Voice For The Arab World

With the recent crisis in Gaza, I think we all have been looking for a voice that can express our unified feelings. Who would have ever though that we can find this voice on the sandy beaches of Rio De Janeiro? Yes, it is the Brazilian Carlos Latuff that has best voiced the Arab's revolt to the barbarism and terrorism of the war.
I was just reading an article from an excellent paper, called el-badeel (i.e. the alternative) that featured an interview with Latuff and the story behind his caricatures. In it, he expresses how he, as a child, admired cartoons, preferred crayons for his birthdays, and how he has come to admire the struggle of the oppressed in the world, be them leftists, communists, or Muslims.
His main message in his latest cartoons has been that the Arab governments are truly subjected to the iron fisted domineering subjugation of Washington and how this is both an opportunity and responsibility for the Arab masses to rise to the call and help of their brothers in Palestine. It is a historical opportunity for unite and rally around a just cause, i.e. the rescue of the a mistreated people. It seems like the international community has fallen silent because of its apprehension to Zionism or its plainly fed up of what seems to be a hopeless conflict that has dragged on for over half a century.
Latuff has been an ardent supporter and voice to the Palestinian struggle for a century now, after visiting the West Bank in 1999 which led him on a spree to raise awareness of the struggle through his animation and caricatures. Although I have some reservations on how he sometimes portrays Egypt as a contributor to the crisis, I respect his revolutionary zeal for freely expressing himself regardless of the consequences and how his mere messages could potentially unite a currently fragmented nation, i.e. the Arab nation.

Am I A Character In Chicago?

Today, I skimmed through the first couple of pages of Alaa El Aswany's Chicago after reading several synopses of the novel. I was thinking to myself how many many of the characters reminded me of someone, and all of the sudden it hit me that I could be that someone. I believe that El Aswany gives life to each and everyone of these characters and their struggle as Egyptians attending univeristy in the U.S. Each of these characters carries his or her unique persona and gives a dimension to the different personalities of Egyptians, except in a Western context. I felt as if I could identify with each of these characters on a personal level and that each of them give a single facet in a multifaceted being, i.e. myself.
The novel dwells into the many stereotypes imposed on Egyptian characters post 9/11. Having experienced America as an Arab for the majority of the years after 9/11, I can definitely relate to the experiences of these characters on a spiritual and mundane level. Aswany gives life to these characters that I feel that they are fellow students go through the same struggles I go through. At times, I feel these characters personify me, they express what I keep bottled up inside me because I feel like I cannot share some of these emotions with others.
From Chicago, I learn that I learn to seek joy in the saddest places, which is what I used to consider Charlottesville. I have learned to put aside ignorance and close-mindedness and replace them with a sense of eagerness to learn. I hope that my observations will one day pay off, as they have for Aswany through his experiences in Chicago.

Egypt's Language Revolution
Now I wouldn't say that the establishment of Wikipedia in Egyptian Arabic signals a lingual revolution, but it definitely signals the spark that might ignite one. Today, Wikipedia is one of the most prevalent tools for the dissemination of information. Considering that almost half of Egypt's population is illiterate, largely due to the fact the public's inability to grasp standardized Arabic due to the dualistic chasm that arises between spoken and written Arabic. To some extent, Masry is hardwired into the Egyptian mentality as it is the resulting culmintaion of Arabic, Coptic, Turkish, and even French and English. The illiterate masses have only access to Masry, as it constitues the lingua franca for everything from television shows to the music they hear. So would an language revolution provide a solution to the widespread illiteracy that Egypt suffers, as was the case in Turkey?
Although this topic has widely been debated in Egypt, I see it more pertinent than ever in the Information Age. There has been a push by intellectuals, such as Qasim Amin and Ahmed Lutfi el Sayed for Egyptianization of Arabic. This was a very secular and liberal movement in reaction to British colonization of Egypt and a push to define and Egyptian identity. So if transforming Egypt's official language from Arabic to Masry was the solution to find our national identity and erradicate illeteracy, what was the obstacle?
Arabic is the language of the Quran, which provides the only link for Egyptians with their religion. Moreover, by letting go of Arabic, Egypt loses its only link with the Arab world. This would lead to isolation that could be irreversible. Countries like Morroco suffer this isolation from the rest of the Arab world due to the distinctness of their dialect. Moroever, standardized Arabic is what holds Egypt united and prevents the fragmentation of Masry into various other regional dialects, such as Nubian, Sa'idi, etc...
Or... the initiation of Masry could lead to a modernization revolution throughout the whole Arab world whereby Masry could be adopted as the modern lingua franca between the Arabs due to its simplicity, which could in turn solve the illiteracy problem in other Arab countries. This is very possible due to the prevalence of Masry in many other parts of the Arab world due to the widespread and popular dissemination of Egyptian media.
Reading the article on Gaberism in Masry, I was able to read the text twice as fast as I would be able to read any classical Arabic text because it is written in the language I speak. I think that the transformation from from Arabic to Masry could immediately make any Egyptian fluent because it would expose him to what he is most familiar with, his language. Although, I find classical Arabic to be much more stylistically beautiful, I would advocate the transformation to Masry as the only pragmatic solution to eradicating illiteracy in Egypt. Wikipedia in Masry could indeed be the first step of a collaborative effort for Egyptians to post, edit, and convey information to the masses of Egypt. I think that if the Egyptians want to really bring about this lingual revolution to educate themselves, they will have to take the initiative to read, write, and modify this new collaborative platform with a voluntary spirit that defines any revolution. I personally will endeavor to refer to Wikipedia in Masry from now on as a way to profess my support and strengthen my connection with the Masry movement.
